Announcing our Bid-Writing Course

March 18, 2013 in News by Dave Mee

Securing funding for your project or organisation is never simple, and with cutbacks and austerity in the air things are not getting easier. Thankfully, we’ve been able to arrange an exclusive full-day workshop with Laura H. Drane, decorated veteran of the bid-writing process. Laura has won bids from £500 to £500,000 in her years of experience, supporting organisations including Manchester Science Festival, Jodrell Bank and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. The techniques and lessons from her successful methodology will be taught through a number of applied exercises and activities, as delivered to the RSA, the Clore Leadership Programme, and British Science.

This is the first time this course will be offered to the general public – usually being delivered to corporate clients – by Laura. However, we’re not just giving you the opportunity to learn from Laura first-hand; you’ll be able to directly address the challenges in the real-world bids you’re actively writing, if you’re currently putting one together (we’ll ask you for the application paperwork in advance). This provides access to expert support for your bid-writing, which would exceed the cost of the course alone; we’re offering it as an optional component of a broader programme, showing real-world best practices and sharing hard-earned tips and techniques.

UPDATE: This course is now available on the 13th May 2013. Please see this link for the syllabus and sign-up information.

September 2012 at Omniversity

August 6, 2012 in News by Florence

September is back to school at the Omniversity with some brilliant upcoming courses featuring our usual array of dazzling experts. Commencing the new semester is the ‘Beginners’ Guide to Arduino and Physical Computing’ course on 1st September 2012 from 10 am – 5:30 pm.

Join in and learn everything you ever needed to know about working with the Arduino platform – from software development to building robotics – and no previous experience is required. Once you’ve covered the basics, you’ll learn ways of actively incorporating what you’ve learned into future projects of your own, whatever the application might be, from creating art installations to kick-starting the robot apocalypse.

Check out our Arduino video if you want to get a bit of a taste for it:

A Learner’s Experience of the VVVV + Projection Mapping course

October 27, 2011 in News by Lia Baron

Little bit late in posting this (busy busy), but: a couple of weekends ago I was lucky enough to grab a spot on an amazing projection mapping course at Madlab, run by Elliot Woods. I’ve been hankering after doing more large-scale work, especially after the Tate projection I did a while ago, so when I saw this course come up I jumped at the chance.

The software that handles everything is called vvvv, and it basically looks like this (yep, no interface):

Kaija’s experience of Web Design Foundations

September 14, 2011 in News by Lia Baron

This autumn Omniversity is running a series of courses on Web Design Foundations starting from the basics of how the web works and ending with the more advanced subjects in HTML and CSS. The first of four step course took place on the 12. of September and brought together a small group of beginners in web design who under the guidance of an evangelist Chris Mills got a general idea of accessibility and usability of websites and test some basic HTML and CSS writing. Doing an apprenticeship in MadLab, I decided impromptu to use the opportunity to take part of the course and get an insight into a field that is completely new to me.

Internet Communication Framework with SAP : The Movie

August 17, 2011 in News by Lia Baron

Yet another movie blockbuster from the Omniversity vaults! This time we’ve rallied DJ Adams‘s hefty knowledge of SAP, for his new course running at the Omniversity, Web Programming with SAP Internet Communication Framework. DJ has been involved in SAP technologies for 24 years, and is an SAP mentor as well as a O’Reilly author, and has been considered a leader in his field since the mid 1990’s.

This 2 day course will lead participants through the intricate framework, allowing you to understand and create your own resource orientated web service magnum opus.

  • You will gain a detailed understanding of SAP’s underlying mechanisms for HTTP communications.
  • You’ll have the knowledge and confidence to build, debug and deploy HTTP orientated interfaces into and out of SAP enterprise systems.
  • You’ll see how to build you own mobile app.
  • You’ll also have some exposure to tips, tricks and tools outside of SAP to help in debugging and testing.

Intrigued? You should be! Find out more here, and see what DJ has to say about the course himself on his blog.

Build your own place on the Web!

Web Design Foundations for everyone

I’m Chris Mills, and I work for web browser company and general geek haven, Opera Software! I have been taking part in little projects at Madlab for over a year now, and have always found them to be welcoming, innovative, creative and very much in agreement with my philosophy of open source information sharing to help everyone improve their skills and get ahead!

I therefore decided to help them out by running a course as part of their Omniversity programme. The course is about web design/development, but before you go running for your nerd shields, please just consider what I have to say.

Premium Pachube Accounts for the Internet of Things course

June 21, 2011 in News by Lia Baron

The lovely people at Pachube have taken the opportunity to sponsor our Building the Internet of Things course. This means, they are offering a free upgrade to a Pachube Premium account to every participant who attends, giving them the best possible Pachube experience.

So what is it? Essentially, it is a on-line database service provider for developers to connect sensor data to the web, and upon that build their own applications. Its a data brokerage platform, which created a list for the Internet of Things, managing millions of data points per day from thousands of individuals, organisations and companies across the world. From this, you can store, share and discover realtime sensor, energy and environment data from objects, devices and buildings, from anywhere you wish.

Web Design Foundations – One Learner’s Tale

March 15, 2011 in News by Lia Baron

I think it’s time I told the world something.

I was a HTML virgin.

Yes indeed, immeasurable years in the IT business and I’d never learned to write HTML code by hand. I admit it, I used Frontpage and Frontpage extensions. I was responsible for putting bad non-compliant code on the web.

Brothers and sisters, I have seen the light, I have been converted and born again to the way of clean clear code and semantics. Can I get a hallelujah and a praise Tim Berners-Lee?
