Pitch in ideas for courses and programmes you’re interested in – we’ll hunt down people to deliver and see if we can hit a critical mass!

@alanholding what courses are you interested in?

I’ve been speaking with Ben at HAC:Man about maybe running a ‘Bringing an arduino toy from mockup to finished product’ course (it needs a snappier name!) might be worth running it as cheapish weekend course?

We’d use one of our projects (like the project a sketch), show the prototype stage (arduino + cables + breakout boards, DIY PCBs, and a final kit version with professionaly made PCBs, and show people how to get in between the stages.

Do you think there’d be interest?

@thinkl33t who is Ben at HAC:Man?

  • Avatar Image Bob Clough said 2 years, 3 months ago:

http://www.fluff.org/ben/ He’s been helping out Alan with getting the lighting thing for TLC ready for manufacture recently.

We’d be running the course between us, probably wouldnt be ready for it until april-ish though.

    “Urban Growing”

I’m interested in delivering a food production (gardening) course, & have spoken to Dave & Hwa about this, but I’d like to fit the course around how people want to learn.

Is a 1, 2, or 3 day course better than several evenings, for example?

I can cover everything from growing food without a garden, to getting fruit, veg, and herbs from a shaded urban yard… what would people like to learn?

@thinkl33t I would be interested in bringing mocks up to prototypes. That sounds really nice, do you have any projects in mind for yourself? Also have you created documentation for Project A Sketch?

  • Avatar Image Bob Clough said 2 years, 3 months ago:

@hwayoung the stage one documentation for project-a-sketch will be going live in the next couple of weeks, once i have replaced the screen and taken some high-res photos of it.

Project-a-sketch is the project we are looking at using for the demo, first demonstrating designing and making a new single-board for it using our bubble tank, then showing the process of getting one professionally made. At each stage we will show that version of the electronics working

I’d like a data mangling course. How to use tools like Google Fusion Tables, how to do a SPARQL query, and so on. Basically, how to make sense of open data stuff without having to learn how to code.

  • Avatar Image DJ Adams said 2 years, 3 months ago:

Hi Alan, I’ve been pondering offering a short course or two on various Google technologies, Google Fusion Tables was one of them. I need to get my tuits in order to complete my first (SAP-related) course content, but I’d love to get your more detailed thoughts or desires in this area. Are you in or around MadLab this week any time?

@richardsmedley I’ve been conducting a survey to see what and when people would like to learn. Surprisingly lots of people want to do urban gardening! Can you fill it in to, and pass it around to see if we can’t get enough interested? http://s.madlab.org.uk/curriculum

  • Avatar Image Alan Holding said 2 years, 3 months ago:

@qmacro Yup. I’ll be at the MadLab this Friday for the Building the Internet of Things course.

  • Avatar Image Dave Mee said 2 years, 3 months ago:

@qmacro @alanholding I’d also be interested in putting on a data mangling course, but without it getting too techie (there’s a lot you can do). Not sure how to frame it though? My fear of coding clojure for Fusion tables is that I think a lot of people will get lost.

  • Avatar Image DJ Adams said 2 years, 3 months ago:

@davemee you’re right. There’s also Google Refine, which is pretty much zero-coding. I’ll pop in on Friday to discuss more, perhaps we can have a fiddle, too.

When is the next Building the Internet of Things course, after Friday? I can’t make Friday unfortunately :(
